Release Notes

Update history for Shogi Dojo. Latest entries also appear under Announcements on the web app home screen.

  1. v3.6.0

Daily goals for everyone, a new record in one click

Daily game and review goals are now on every plan. On days you miss a goal, or have reviews waiting, we remind you at 9 pm (by email too, if you choose). 「新しい棋譜」 on the records page starts a record from the opening position in one click. You can name the list when you create a quiz, and a toast confirms it. A player with no name now shows as Black/White.

  2. v3.5.0

「振り返る」 after a game, 「続きから」 on the home page

When a game ends, 「振り返る」 analyses it and turns your mistakes into next-move quizzes; 「もう一局」 takes you straight to another game. The home page now shows where you left off — your latest game's next step and today's reviews. A finished analysis sends a notification that leads to making the quiz.

  3. v3.4.0

Send feedback, sounds, and icons for everyone

「感想を送る」 (Send feedback) in the menu lets you tell the developer what you noticed or where you got lost — no sign-in needed. Buttons, dialogs and finished posts now make a sound (turn it off with the speaker in the menu bar). Profile icons are no longer Premium-only, and you can pick one when you choose your username.

  4. v3.3.0

Choose a username, comment icons, and from a quiz to its game

So that a Google (or other) sign-in no longer shows your real name, you are now asked to pick a username first, on the same screen as the initial rating. Comments on reviews, quizzes and the forum now show the writer's icon. A quiz made from a game shows 「棋譜へ」 after you answer, to see how the game went on.

  5. v3.2.0

View, edit and delete posts from the CLI

The command-line tool (shogidojo) can now show, edit and delete your own posts (post get / update / delete). An edit changes only what you give it; updating without the body or tags no longer empties them.

  6. v3.1.0

    Board images for public quizzes

Public quiz lists now get the same board image as the daily real-game mate puzzle. Each problem shows its position, the side to move and a 「次の一手」 (next move) heading, never the answer, ready to share on social media.

  7. v3.0.0

    Shogi Dojo v3

A release that reworks the game, review and analysis screens together. Mate search now runs in the same panel as normal analysis, and every reading line is written in game-record notation. As Gote your own piece stand and clock sit on your side, and the review screen no longer repeats its buttons. Quizzes are counted in lists, and publishing a deck publishes the lists in it. The pricing page has been rebuilt too.

  8. v2.11.0

Mate search in the same analysis panel, and a clearer game and review screen

The mate-puzzle engine is now chosen from the same list as the analysis engines, and a mate shows in the same analysis panel as "Mate in 7". Every reading line is written in game-record notation such as ▲7六歩. On the game screen your own piece stand and clock sit on your side even as Gote, and the byoyomi voice stops when the game ends. Records that return to an earlier position are no longer cut off in review. The review screen no longer shows the like and analysis buttons twice, and its tabs and comment button are easier to read.

  9. v2.10.0

    A clearer pricing page

The pricing page has been rebuilt. It now says exactly what Premium changes, with a side-by-side comparison with the free plan and a short FAQ. What you pay after the free period, and how to cancel, are shown right next to the subscribe button.

  10. v2.9.0

Premium, one tap from every screen

A Premium button now sits at the top of the side menu and in the menu bar. The pricing page can be viewed without signing in; you are asked to sign in only when you subscribe. Subscribers don't see the button.

  11. v2.8.0

Board previews for mate puzzle links, and a clearer quiz page on phones

Share a real-game mate puzzle link (such as /quiz/today) on social media or in chat and the preview now shows that puzzle's board with a heading like “#2 mate in 7”. On phones, the auto-flip switch and the accuracy card on the quiz page are easier to read.

  12. v2.7.0

One link to today's real-game mate puzzle

Open shogidojo.online/quiz/today to solve today's first real-game mate puzzle straight away. The link stays the same every day, so you can bookmark it or put it in a profile. Add ?n=2 for the second puzzle and ?n=3 for the third. Before the morning puzzles are published, it opens yesterday's. No sign-in needed.

  13. v2.6.0

Real-game mate puzzles and Puzzle of the Day, the Shogi Dojo rating, likes and answers without signing in, and clearer competition pages

“Real-game mate puzzles” are new: every day, mates that appeared in real games, ready to solve from “Puzzle of the Day” on the home screen. You can now like quizzes and games, and your quiz answers are counted, without signing in. Like and comment buttons now sit prominently on quizzes and games. Quiz decks show “Everyone’s record”: how many people answered, the correct rate, likes and comments — the rate counts each person’s first answer. The Shogi Dojo rating is here: a rating Shogi Dojo calculates independently from the wins and losses published by the Japan Shogi Association, with a monthly ranking and each player’s rating history. Competition pages have easier-to-read league tables and brackets, and the list is grouped by category and by competition. You can leave comments on other people’s games, but only a game’s owner can change its moves.

  14. v2.5.0

Much faster pages, an actions panel in Review, and a smoother path from import to quiz

Pages load much faster while you are signed in: Home, quizzes, reviews, the game list and most other screens now open within a second. The path from importing a game to analysing it, making quizzes and reviewing them has been reworked. “Import a game” on the home screen now opens the import dialog directly. Batch analysis shows its progress right in the review screen and, when it finishes, takes you straight on to making quizzes. New decks are named after the players, and you are told when no move lost enough points to make a quiz. Fixed a bug where “Today's review” could end without showing any problems. In quizzes, the board now fits on a laptop screen, and on wide screens the clock sits beside the board. In Review, all actions — analysis, quiz from this position, batch analysis, like, position image, edit board and more — are now in one panel; on a phone, open it from “Actions” in the bottom bar. The category and visibility settings are shown only to the game's owner. Fixed bots sometimes being unavailable for a while after updates or restarts. The landing page and guides have a new design.

  15. v2.4.0

Rebuilt tsume engine, game scheduling, positions in posts, and better quiz decks and notifications

The official tsume shogi engine has been replaced with “Rustify Tsume Engine”. Following the rules of tsume shogi, it does not count useless interpositions as defences, builds the solution from the defending side's longest line, and also checks for alternative solutions. In Engine Management, the official engines are now shown as “Official server”, with a description of each engine. “Schedule a game” has been added to the top of the lobby: just pick a friend and set the date, time and time control. Your opponent can accept from the notification or the email, and the game starts automatically at the set time. Time controls are now shown like “1 min + 30 s”, and bots are grouped under “Play a bot”. Practice opponents on the home screen now only shows bots you can play right now. In posts, you can now choose a position, game record or analysis from My games or Public games, set the position with a move slider and insert it (no need to enter an SFEN or ID). The editing screen is also easier to read. Quiz decks now show each deck's number of problems, today's reviews and progress, and you can solve or review straight from the card. Study record now shows dates and counts. The notifications page now has a link to Notification settings and an explanation of when notifications are sent. From now on, release notes will be published every time in all languages on this page and in the app's announcements.

  16. v2.3.8

Rebuilt Game Record Search and Find quizzes, analysis embeds in posts, and a pro competition database

Game Record Search has been rebuilt. Shogi Dojo games are listed as soon as you open it, and you can filter by player name, period, opening and result (to search by position, use the Position database). In Find quizzes, you can pick decks by theme, popularity, newest or number of problems, and solve them straight from the card or copy them for yourself. Posts can now embed a game's evaluation graph ([eval:]) and a position's evaluation and best move ([position:]). Added a database of professional competitions and players (Competitions and Pro players). Public quizzes can now be solved to the end without signing in. The Search Users, Friends, Chat, Forum, Circles, Tournaments, Store, Engine Management, Leaderboard and User Settings screens, among others, are now easier to use on phones, and wording and dates are consistent in every language. Added a game info panel and a chat notice when your opponent leaves. Opening game records and loading the home screen are faster. Fixes: account deletion sometimes failing, player names being identifiable from Shogi Wars game record IDs, featured articles appearing twice in the list, and an old screen remaining after an update.

  17. v2.2.10

Overhauled game, analysis and quiz screens, and every word in 15 languages

The analysis screen now fits the board, evaluation, best move and move number on one screen, and marks the previous move and the best move on the board. Engine analysis is easier to use, and the toolbar buttons now have labels. On phones, the board stretches to the full screen width during a game, and the flip board button has moved off the board. Fixed the orientation of the gote king and game records not opening from the first move, among other issues. Bot initial ratings now match their dan/kyu ranks, and a Bot that gets checkmated resigns and stays connected. Ratings are now correctly calculated using the opponent's rating. Added the My games list and Import kifu (import from a URL, with results shown for imported games). Quizzes keep the author's time limit, show all answers, and the quiz creation screen now uses wording shogi players understand. The landing page, home and lobby were redesigned, Bots were removed from the rankings, and Play now is at the top. Every piece of text on screen has been translated into 15 languages. We also fixed the ChatGPT and Claude plugins, started distributing the desktop app for Windows and Linux, and sped up the home rankings and the Position database.

  18. v2.1.9

AI assistant integration (MCP server) and plugins

We've launched an MCP server that lets ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini use your Shogi Dojo game records, the Position database and quizzes. It connects securely via OAuth, and you can choose to allow read-only access or writing as well. Added an AI guide page explaining how to use it. Fixed how “Get the app” appears in the documentation, and added the documentation pages to the sitemap. Fixed the in-game indicator in the lobby appearing on Bot icons.

  19. v2.0.11

Database moved to a distributed, multi-site database

The database has moved to YugabyteDB distributed across multiple sites, so the service can keep running at another site if one goes down. Commonly used screens load faster across the board, and nightly statistics updates and monitoring have been added. Fixed “Your session has expired” appearing while guests view game records.

  20. v1.9.6

Desktop “Shogi Dojo”, iOS and Android apps, and the CLI

The desktop app is now unified as “Shogi Dojo”, combining the web app and the engine in one (Mac App Store, Windows, Linux). The old Remote Agent has been retired, and all guidance now points to the new app. The iOS app supports App Store in-app purchases and native sign-in, and on the free plan shows ads with your consent. Google Play and App Store listing pages are available in 15 languages. The command-line tool (CLI) gains browser sign-in and the commands introduced in the guide. Importing ShogiHome game records with engine thinking comments is now supported. Fixed the PWA app name and icon.

  21. v1.8.10

Mate solver returns, Linux version, and many bug fixes

The tsume (mate) solver is back. Fixed analysis not working with public engines, and it being unclear which piece to drop when the best move is a drop from hand. Also fixed Edit and Delete appearing on other people's quizzes, a red “Disconnected from server” appearing after signing out, and the post-game review retry button not working. The Linux version is now distributed via the openSUSE Build Service. The landing page now shows photos of the actual screens, and the home greeting for guests was fixed.

  22. v1.7.0

Easier game record analysis and quizzes

On the game record analysis screen, stepping forward and back through moves is easier, and the game record in quizzes no longer covers the board. Fixed incorrect mate solver values appearing in the evaluation graph, and added marks for the previous move and the best move on the board. The relationship between decks and lists is now clearer.

  23. v1.6.1

Post-quiz analysis lines & notes, and a public sample quiz

After you answer a quiz, the reveal now shows candidate lines — the engine's best move, the second-best, and the move actually played, each with its evaluation and reading line — plus an optional note (Markdown/HTML). When building a quiz from a game analysis, the “skip the opponent's replies” option is always available, and the list editor now opens with the first problem selected so you can add a continuation move, edit the candidate lines and evaluations, and write the post-quiz note from the start. The example quiz is no longer copied into every account: it now lives as one PUBLIC sample owned by the official Shogi Dojo account, which everyone (guests included) can find via quiz search. That account also seeds a few example posts.

  24. v1.6.0

Shogi Posts, guest browsing, and the even-position Sprint

Added Shogi Posts: publish articles, games (kifu) and book reviews with embedded positions and opening tags, using a Markdown/HTML visual editor, with likes and a Featured feed; the official Shogi Dojo account seeds example posts. Guests can now browse most of the app without signing in — rankings, position explorer, posts, forum, tournaments, quizzes, user search, and spectating live games in the Lobby — and are gently prompted to sign in when an action needs an account. The even-position Sprint is now a match mode alongside bullet/blitz/standard, starting from a balanced middlegame/endgame position the server picks at match time. Added a sitemap and robots.txt for SEO. For compliance, ShogiWars player names are masked in the public position database. Fixes: subscribing no longer fails when a stored Stripe customer no longer exists, and white-side blunder detection in quiz drafts is corrected.

  25. v1.5.0

Kishin Scan & Chat, handicap matches, profile revamp, and more

Added Kishin Scan (read a board from an image with AI) and Kishin Chat (AI commentary on a position) — OpenAI usage now counts toward your token balance. The Lobby gains handicap / custom-position matches, with the rating swing scaled by the position's eval (winning from the disadvantaged side gains more). Auto-matching adds a rating-range cap and an exclude-bots toggle. Your profile detail can now show your 81Dojo and Shogi Wars IDs, each public or private. Quizzes show the engine's read (PV), auto-flip to the side to move, reveal the played blunder with its eval, and support deck deletion. Uploaded KIF files are now fully removed from the cloud on delete. Premium moved to a dedicated product with in-app checkout and per-currency pricing, and subscription errors are fixed.

  26. v1.4.5

Bug fixes and a large batch of usability improvements

Fixed the "Unable to transform response" error on pages loading many procedures at once (a server limit). Fixed "recent games" always empty, the {rate}/{n} placeholders in the token panel, and the duplicated token-usage display. Store product names are translated in every language; buying coins lets you pick currency and amount with a confirmation step. Notifications and release notes are localized. Engine Management adds a default engine, per-engine cores/threads, tsume/normal capabilities, and online status for shared engines. Tournaments support delete/edit, a series name, and a special prize; pro titles and dan/kyu ranks can no longer be granted as prizes. Failures now show the actual reason.

  27. v1.4.4

Analysis tokens and the store, AWS offload, search and notification cleanup

Position analysis now runs on tokens. Free and Pro plans each get a monthly allowance, and once it runs out you can buy more tokens with coins in the store (coins are purchased via Stripe). Pro accounts can set CPU cores and hash size, and the token cost scales with them (free accounts are pinned to the baseline, with the controls shown locked). Under heavy load, Pro analyses can be offloaded to AWS — and to keep costs safe, every offloaded job carries a hard time limit, a global concurrency cap, and a per-user daily cap, so a stuck or spammed job can't run up the bill. The store now sells analysis tokens. Chat gains hide-from-list and search, the forum gains thread search, and notifications can be deleted individually or cleared all at once (mark-all-read as before). The waiting-room bot now shows only in its own rating tab, the quiz-deck screen's settings button and layout were tidied, a public tsume (mate) solver is supported, and the confusing error shown on an expired session is fixed.

  28. v1.4.1

A reworked quiz flow, analysis that survives engine deletion, forum threads

The quiz clock now resets every question (a timeout no longer breaks the rest of the list). Wrong → redo the question; a list can be replayed from the start. A correct run is graded on three levels (hard / medium / easy) that set the next review date. Tsume problems can become quizzes (variations optional), and the opponent's reply now plays with sound at a readable pace. Answer time is set on the list's edit screen, and you can choose the max repetitions and a daily list limit. Deleting an engine now keeps its analysis. On the forum, every post has an id you can reference with #id, posts can be replied to and reported (auto-hidden past a threshold), and a deleted post reads 'this post by X was deleted' in place.

  29. v1.3.8

A shared board that keeps your move, more notifications, and in-app payment

Moving a piece on a chat's shared board no longer snaps back to the previous position, and the board now shows the move that was played and who played it. Notifications cover more: replies in threads you posted in, comments on your games, and being added as a friend — and the chat notification switch that lived elsewhere has joined the rest. The forum has a board, so threads can be started. Paying and managing a subscription happen in the app instead of on an external page (the card is still handled by Stripe). New accounts start with 300 coins. Chat on a phone, the menu bar and the quiz screen have all been tidied up.

  30. v1.3.7

Opening-book quizzes, a mate solver, and who can see your records

Import an opening book and it becomes a deck of quizzes — one per branch, covering the whole book exactly once, with the next review date set by how well each branch went. Records now say what they are (next move / opening / mate problem / game / other), and a mate problem can be handed to a solver such as KomoringHeights. Imported records are private by default; publishing one is the owner's choice. Leagues can record draws, the organiser sets how points are scored (including a bonus for beating a higher-rated player) and how ties are broken, and Swiss and McMahon are supported. A circle's chat now lives on the circle's own page, players are shown with their title, id and rating together, and the sidebar has been tidied up.

  31. v1.3.6

Deleting a record can be undone

Only imported records can be taken out of the file list now — a game played here cannot be deleted at all. What you remove keeps its file in cloud storage and can be restored at any time from “Deleted records”. Quizzes let you choose which deck a new list joins, and a list is never more visible than the deck it sits in. The file preview shows the file’s contents again, and a bug that refused connections from the mobile app is fixed.

  32. v1.3.5

Opening analysis and a richer profile

Every record is now tagged with the opening it was, and your profile shows your favourite opening and castle, the circles you belong to, and a collection of the openings and castles you have reached. The record can be split by time control. Games played here are now told apart from imported records, and search can filter by that. On a phone the board finally uses the whole screen, and downloading a KIF saves the file instead of opening it.

  33. v1.3.3

    Tournaments, circles and opening analysis

Tournaments now have a start time, search and an approval step before a title is granted. Each circle has its own overview page, and quiz lists are paginated. Your profile now shows an opening tendency, detected automatically from your games. Ads are only loaded after you consent. Also fixed: the broken layout of the home leaderboards, and a bug that left the playing AI missing from the lobby until it was restarted.

  34. v1.2.2

    Now available in 15 languages

The app and landing page are now available in 15 languages, with per-language fonts and right-to-left (RTL) support for Arabic.

  35. New match AI: @Rustify

A new match AI, "@Rustify", has joined the lobby. It's also now available as a free, public analysis engine anyone can use from the review screen. The previous AI, "YaneuraOu", has been retired as part of this update.

  36. v1.2.1

    Major quiz feature upgrade

You can now batch-analyze an entire game from the review screen and auto-generate a quiz deck from its blunders. Quiz search is now a proper deck list, with JSON file/text import, appending cards to an existing deck, and deleting individual cards. Also fixed public engines being editable/deletable by mistake and other small bugs.

  37. v1.2.0

Game logic rebuilt on CSA compliance

Game arbitration (legal moves, repetition, drop-pawn mate, entering-king declaration, time control, etc.) is now delegated to the official CSA reference implementation, shogi-server. The match AI now plays as a standard CSA client, and any USI engine (including GPU-based ones) can be launched. Fixed the game screen freezing, false timeouts, an unreadable friend-request button, and display names not updating.

  38. v1.1.1

Match AI, chat templates & mobile polish

Fixed the match AI so it actually plays its moves. Added quick-send chat templates (greetings / resignation), a new-message toast notification (toggle in settings) and an auto-sent resign greeting. Improved the mobile board size, clocks and chat input, and fixed KIF saving and lobby re-hosting.

  39. v1.1.0

    Leaderboard, support form, eval labels

Added time-filtered leaderboard (today / week / month / all time), docs support form, and evaluation labels such as even / slight advantage.

  40. v1.0.5

    Post-game review, history, FAQ

Added post-game chat, game history page, and docs FAQ. The board and chat stay visible for a while after a game ends.

  41. v1.0.0

    Welcome to Shogi Dojo

Play in the lobby and train with quizzes. Rankings show rating, games played, and win stars.
